The renovation reimagines a compact urban apartment through a process of strategic subtraction and addition. The intervention focuses on creating a bright, open living area, that can be easily transformed into a temporary studio working space when needed.
A large kitchen that once dominated the living area was demolished,
to free space and allow daylight to penetrate deeply into the plan.
A new cooking and washing area was introduced at the rear side of the apartment, thus freeing space next to the balcony windows for the living and dining area.
At the center of this reorganization stands a full height sliding door, conceived as both aperture and illusion. The door operates as a formal interplay between wall and threshold: only half of what appears to be a movable surface is actually functional, while the other half conceals a pre-existing fixed wall. This ambiguity reinforces the project’s interest in the tension between architectureal intention and material and financial restraints.
